Sampling is the stage of apparel manufacturing that most first-time brands underestimate — both in its importance and in how it works. A pre-production sample is not just a prototype to look at. It is the benchmark that every unit in your bulk order will be compared against. Getting your sample right is the most important thing you can do to ensure your bulk order meets your expectations.
Why Sampling Is the Most Important Stage of Apparel Production
The sample is your opportunity to catch problems before they become expensive. A seam that is slightly off, a label that is not centred, a fabric that is heavier than expected — these are all easily corrected at the sample stage for the cost of a new sample. In bulk production, the same issues cost fabric, labour, time and brand reputation.
ZN Apparel Manufacturers makes sampling mandatory for all first-time styles. No bulk production order begins without a client-approved sample. This is not optional — it is a quality commitment.
The Sampling Process at ZN Apparel Manufacturers
Tech Pack Review
Our production team reviews your tech pack before sampling begins. Any unclear specifications, conflicting measurements or missing information are identified and resolved with you before fabric is sourced. This prevents the most common cause of sample failure — manufacturing to an ambiguous spec.
Fabric and Trim Sourcing
Your specified fabric and all trims — zippers, labels, drawstrings, buttons, elastics — are sourced or confirmed. A fabric swatch is sent to you for approval if required before the sample is cut, preventing a surprise when the finished garment arrives.
Sample Construction
Your sample is cut and sewn by our most experienced sewers from the approved fabric. All construction details are followed exactly as specified in your tech pack. In-line checks during construction catch any issues before the garment is completed.
Decoration and Branding
Printing, embroidery, labels and packaging are applied to the sample exactly as they will appear in bulk production. You receive the sample with all branding applied — this is what your customer will receive, not just the sewn shell.
Delivery and Feedback
The sample is photographed, packaged and shipped to you. Typical delivery: 1-3 days domestically, 3-7 days internationally. You review the sample against your tech pack and expectations, and provide feedback: approve, approve with minor notes, or request revision.

How many sample rounds are typically needed?
Most orders require one or two sample rounds. Brands with detailed, accurate tech packs often approve on the first sample. Brands with less detailed briefs or complex constructions typically need two rounds. Rare cases require three rounds for complex constructions with multiple revision points.
Can I approve the sample remotely without receiving it in person?
We strongly recommend receiving the physical sample — photographs do not accurately represent fabric weight, hand feel or construction quality. Some clients in markets where shipping costs are high approve based on our detailed photo sets, but physical review is always our recommendation for a first-time style.
